- The first World Environment Day was celebrated on June 5, 1973, chosen by the UN.
- The first World Environment Day was celebrated on June 5, 1972, to commemorate the first major international conference on environmental issues by the UN. It was held in Stockholm to mark a turning point in global environmental policy and awareness.

- Historical Significance: Opening day of the Stockholm Conference, also known as the UN Conference on the Human Environment. It’s the first global conference to address global environmental issues which led to the formation of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).
