The city is an administrative district and a former city in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. The weird silent "k" in Etobicoke's name comes from the Ojibwe term "wadoopikaang," which refers to an area where alder trees grow. Europeans first showed up in the Etobicoke area in the 1790s.
